Frequently asked questions

How do I open an existing Markdown file or folder?
  • Files: press ⌘O, right-click a file in Finder › Open With › MomentMD, or drop it on the Dock icon. .md, .markdown, .mdx and .txt are supported.
  • Folders: File › Open Folder… (⇧⌘O). The folder appears in the sidebar, and you can open several at once.

On first launch the sidebar shows a built-in sample workspace. You can always return to it from File › Open Recent.

Do I need to save manually?

No. Autosave is on by default: your document is written to disk about a second after you stop typing, and the status capsule at the bottom right shows Saved. You can still press ⌘S at any time, or turn autosave off in Settings (⌘,).

Will saving change my formatting?

Nothing you didn't touch is changed. Only the blocks you edited are written back; everything else stays byte-for-byte identical — list markers (- / *), emphasis style, table spacing, the number of blank lines, line endings (LF / CRLF), encoding (UTF-8, GBK, UTF-16) and BOM.

Edited blocks get a vermilion bar in the left margin so you can see what will be written. Edited blocks also follow the document's existing style — if your lists use *, new items do too.

How do I switch between editing modes?

Use the Live Preview / Split / Source buttons at the top right, or the shortcuts: ⌘/ toggles between Live Preview and Source, and ⌥⌘/ toggles Split. All three modes are editable; in Split mode, edits on either side are synced to the other instantly.

Where did the Markdown syntax go?

In Live Preview, the Markdown markers of the block containing the cursor (such as **, ## or a link's URL) are shown, and hidden again when you move away. Pressing Delete at the start of a heading first turns it back into plain syntax (for example ## Title); press again to merge with the previous paragraph.

How do I insert tables, code blocks, math and diagrams?
  • Type / on an empty line and pick from the menu;
  • Right-click › Quick Insert, or click the + that appears at the start of an empty line when you hover over it;
  • Or type the syntax: ```swift starts a code block, $…$ is inline math, $$ starts a math block and ```mermaid starts a diagram.

Edit tables right in the cells: Tab moves to the next cell, the table toolbar adds and removes rows and columns and sets alignment, and you can drag borders to resize columns.

How do I copy a code block?

Click Copy at the top right of the code block, or right-click inside it › Copy Code. This copies the code without the fences. You can also select code with the mouse and press ⌘C.

Where do pasted or dropped images go?

By default they're copied into an assets folder next to the document and inserted with a relative path (such as ![](assets/image.png)), so they travel with the folder. You can switch to a per-document filename.assets folder in Settings.

Note: for a document opened on its own (not inside a folder in the sidebar), the macOS sandbox may not allow writing next to it. Open its folder with Open Folder… first, then paste the image.

Remote images in my document don't show up.

MomentMD loads remote images only over https://; plain http:// images are not loaded for security. Also check that you're online and that the image URL opens in a browser.

What happens if another app changes the file?

If you have no unsaved changes in MomentMD, the new version on disk is reloaded silently. If you do, you're asked whether to keep yours, use the version on disk, or compare them.

The app quit unexpectedly. Is my unsaved text lost?

No. MomentMD snapshots unsaved documents every 5 seconds and offers to restore them on the next launch. Snapshots are kept only in the app's container on your Mac.

Which export formats are supported?

Click the Export button at the top right (⇧⌘E): PDF (paginated, with bookmarks), single-file HTML (optionally with images embedded as Base64), long PNG image, Word (.docx), and Copy as Rich Text for email and publishing platforms. Export uses the same rendering as the editor and needs no other software.

How do I change the language, theme or dark mode?
  • Language: Settings (⌘,) › General › Language: System Default, Simplified Chinese or English. The app's own interface switches immediately; system menu items switch after a restart.
  • Theme: Settings › Appearance: Moment, Night, Paper or Graphite, optionally following the system's light or dark appearance. The status capsule at the bottom right also has a light/dark toggle.
How do Focus Mode and Typewriter Mode work?

F8 toggles Focus Mode (the current paragraph stays sharp and the rest fades), and F9 toggles Typewriter Mode (the current line stays centered in the window). Both are also in the status capsule at the bottom right.

Why do some folders need permission?

The Mac App Store version runs in the macOS sandbox and can access only files and folders you choose. Once you open a location through the Open panel, drag and drop or Open With, MomentMD remembers the permission, so you don't need to pick it again after relaunching.

Is it fast with large documents?

MomentMD parses and lays out documents incrementally, block by block, and only re-lays out the block you changed. Documents with tens of thousands of lines or several megabytes stay smooth to type in and scroll.

How do I uninstall completely?

Move MomentMD from Applications to the Trash, then delete ~/Library/Containers/com.moment.md, which holds preferences, the sample workspace and crash-recovery snapshots. Your own documents are not affected.
